I paid $125 for my last helmet because it was the only one in the shop that was comfortable and was the colour of my bike. But yes, AS1698 is AS1698, I would have nothing less. Hang on, there is nothing less, unless you bought your helmet in Bali. My bicycle helmet (Bell) is not compliant to the Aus standard, but that was because I bought it before there was an Aus standard. The Aus standard made it illegal. I still prefer it to the modern shell-less helmets and, when I first got it, the wife bought me a sticker for it that is irreplacable, a rat on a bicycle. Theo Theo

The safety difference between a $79 helmet and a $1000 helmet is that one is AS1698 compliant while the other is AS1698 compliant. The $1000 helmet may be more comfortable, have better airflow, and better fittings, but not necessarily. The real difference is $921 and the buyer's ego. Theo |
