(As I'm sure you know 9/16 and 11/16 are also fairly interchangeable
with 14 & 17mm and 3/4 will swap with 19mm in a pinch too)

I've actually used a 16 (for the first time ever) trying to undo the
alternator-bracket on a "Holden" (Vauxhall) Astra.
It turned-out that the pulley-tension was spring-loaded (and thus I
didn't need to undo the bracket) so I've still never actually completed
a 16mm undoing!

No, but I do have motorcycle boots that were worn out 5 years ago.

If you buy metric 10mm bolts from Bunnings they have a 16mm nut.
