I used the Canon SLRs 300D, 1000D and currently the 500D and I'd recommend
any of them.

In the UK they often come with a 18-55mm kit lens, and also can have an
offer of buying a 70-30mm at the same time for a reduced price.

Likewise the Nikons. I've got the D40 and it seems alright, so I'd
recommend whatever the modern equivalent is.

Lets face it, all the big name DSLRs are going to suffice.

I can see I'd better buy a book on cameras. I don't know what all those
numbers mean or indeed what a DSLR is.

Can't fault my EOS450D. Often available in kits with extra lenses, the
70-300mm being a popular one.

Battery life is huge, IME. Flash, OTOH, leaves a certain amount to be
desired, although that is possibly just me.
