From: Homer Simpson on 16 Mar 2007 22:02 I am in the process of repainting my tank, as it started rusting UNDER the paint. Since my headlight bucket is rusted to hell, I decided to try to strip it and paint it..... however, this thing is BAD..... I was thinking about putting maybe a round headlight in place of the rectangular one. Has anyone done this, or know what kind of bike to look for one off of? I will probably hit the cycle yards (there are only two here aound Daytona Beach) and pick up a used one, as I am limited to cash flow.... Any help would be appreicated..... and welcomed!
From: Ron Seiden on 16 Mar 2007 22:14 All you need is one that uses the same kind of bulb -- so that you won't need to wire up a different plug. Of course, I've seen old bikes that used crappy dim headlights (i.e., old Triumph Bonny with Lucas "electrics") that got their original headlight sockets clipped off and a 3-prong socket from a car wired in so a "real" headlight could be installed... You may want to measure your headlight brackets & try to find something in the junkyard that will fit in without having to cobble up much in the way of new/additional bracketry. 'Course, you could also pull a headlight bucket out of a car & make your own nacelle for it (wrap it in chicken wire formed to the shape you want & then wrapped in fiberglass). Take the old one along with you to compare. -- BMW K1100LT 750SS CB400F CD250 Z650 GAGARPHOF#30 GHPOTHUF#1 BOTAFOT#60 ANORAK#06 YTC#3 BOF#30 WUSS#5 The bells, the bells.....
From: Homer Simpson on 17 Mar 2007 14:10 I stripped this thing the best I could with what I have (60g sandpaper on a Mouse, and sanding wheels & wire wheels on a Dremel. After a few coats of primer, it looks better, but it is pitted really bad, and I really couldn't get all the rust off.... (I am using a etching primer) I was browsing the net last night, and found a few Magna headlights, but they all want a premium for buckets in the same shape as mine. I thought about maybe mounting two round headlights on the brackets for the original, but that means wiring mods I don't want to do right now. However I do it, the replacement has to have room for a wiring harness that is in there, and a future high/low modulator that I am working on. Needs to be metal, as I run a 100/135 H4 bulb. Find a motorcycle junkyard. Take your bucket with you. Match it up to something with the right shape and correct distance between mounting brackets. My '83 V45 Magna had a Suzuki headlight, probably still does. I haven't seen it in about 10 years. >thought about maybe mounting two round headlights on the brackets for >the original, but that means wiring mods I don't want to do right now. Don't go there. Your alternator won't like it. >However I do it, the replacement has to have room for a wiring harness >that is in there, and a future high/low modulator that I am working >on. Forget it. You couldn't stuff an extra flea in there, much less a modulator. > Needs to be metal, as I run a 100/135 H4 bulb. I hope you've done the alternator wiring harness mod, otherwise it's going to fry at the connector if it hasn't already. Find the alternator connector. It's 3 yellow wires going to the rectifier. Remove the connector and solder the wires together. The connector fails under high load and kills your alternator. -- Jack Hunt IBA#12795, STOC 1870 '99 ST1100, FaST Forward '95 Suzuki DR250SE http://www.huntslodge.com
