You might get away with wearing a 1/2 helmet, you have reasonable skills. I would put you in the top 1% of all riders with regards to skills. I might be in the top 5%-10% of riders regarding skills. Should a newbie or someone who is unsure of their skills wear a 1/2 helmet? IMO, no. So not everyone who wears a 1/2 helmet is going to be killed, but I would say that people who have serious wrecks in 1/2 helmets have more significant head/facial injuries than people who wear full face helmets. Now I am sure there is no study out there to show this, but reasonable sense should hold that the instances of injury are higher when the head is not fully protected. Not to mention issues with bugs and gravel. -- Andrew 00 Daytona 00 Speed Triple 05 Squiddo

Not to mention issues with bugs and gravel. I agree that a 3/4 helmet gives better protection than a 1/2 helmet. I agree that a full face helmet provides better protection than a 3/4 helmet, I think a Roadcrafter Aerostich full suit with armor provides better protection than jeans and a t-shirt. Gloves provide better protection than the skin on your hands. Boots better protectin than sneakers. I believe that riders should get rider education, and I think that education should, of course, provide accurate information about the value of proper protective gear. I have no problem with people responding to a question about a half helmet by either asking if the rider has considered a helmet with more complete coverage, or if the rider has ever heard that other helmets can provide better protection. I did, after all, spend 14 years of weekends educating about 4,500 to 5,000 riders about just such things. What I object to is the characterization that someone who chooses something less than the fullest coverage helmet, the most armored full riding suit, the most articulated boots, and the best carbon-fiber reinforced motorcycle roadracing gloves (and what next, riding without one of those new personal airbag deployment devices?) as being stupid, or reckless, or bound to die (which are some of the precise descriptions being bandied about in this thread, even if not by you) when no one has the slightest idea whether any of those characterizations is true. That's all.

It was just speculation anyway...for all any of us know she could look like Sophia Loren (in her cougar prime). <shrug> I wouldn't worry about it. |
