Bikes are funner than cars even when they wont start.
I clocked out Friday, ready for a couple of days off. Flipped the
switch, thumbed the starter. The engine turned over fine, sputtered a
bit, then just kept turning over. I waited a minute tried again, same
result, except this time there was an impressive bang that echoed
throughout the industrial park, followed by a wisp of smoke from the air
cleaner. A couple times I would here a blubba blubba sound from the
exhaust after I released my thumb from the starter. This scenario was
repeated a couple more times when I decided that it wasn't going to fire.
This is the first time in 85000 miles I have had any problems with this
bike, a 2002 fuel injected Softail Deuce.
It was cool, stayed about 38 degrees all day. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot it
shouldn't be that cold here. For some reason I am convinced this had
something to do with it, though I have no facts to base this assumption on.
Now came all the parking lot mechanics with advice, and a few stories
from folks who "wished they hadn't sold their bikes" or "man I wish I
had a bike". This was all very nice, but not helpful. A beer would have
been helpful.
My new friends and neighbors have a couple bikes, and all the necessary
straps, vehicles and trailers needed to haul a bike, plus plenty of
beer. So I gave them a call, and they were eager to help, as I figured
they would be.
I endured a few more stories while I waited.
Paul arrived in about twenty minutes with what looked to me like a very
skinny board. Despite my reservations, we maneuvered the bike into the
back of his truck and strapped it down. By this time it was dark and
cold, so Paul gave me an ice cold beer, which I drank appreciatively.
Shortly we arrived back in the neighborhood and unloaded the bike in his
yard. There's a nice ditch that we were able to back the truck into and
unload the bike at only a slight incline. I pushed it into his driveway,
went inside and proceeded to drink the beer I gave him.
After we put a dent in the beer supply, we pushed my bike down the
street and into my garage, where it sits now, plugged into my battery
tender.
A round of drinks for those who stuck with this, and another for any
advice on where to start.

Even though it cranked, I think the battery is suspect.

85000 miles and no problems?
The Lort has already helped you. It's up to a mechanic now.

Not hard to do with a little PM.

Glory!
Hopefully it wont come to that. I'm buying a new ba-tray first. I just
tried it after being on the ba-tray tender all night, and it fired right up.
