I recall a figure of fixed and massively signposted cameras in NSW
catching somethig like 1200 drivers a month.

It's a tax on driver distraction I think. I admit I got caught by one
I'd been riding past every work day for months. Thinking about
something else, and not really noticing where I was. Riding on
autopilot.

The scary thing about riding in Canberra is the number of drivers
there who do operate on autopilot. I used to spend holidays there when
my parents lived in the ACT and most of my near SMIDSY moments
(fortunately none connecting) were on Canberra T-Intersections where
people seemed to think it was OK to sail out without looking first.
Even more perilous than Sydney commuting.

Therefore a tax on distraction is probably a good thing.

Not true about hiding them in speed cones. There was a covert road-
cone camera developed in the 70's but any pictures you see are
archive. If I saw one, I'd steer a bit left and take it out, wouldn't
you? It was never approved or used.

Instead, the trend went to high visibility. They are ALL (by law)
made extra-visible with reflective stickers, like this:

PS. While searching for pictures of the road cone camera that was
never deployed, I came across this:

And as Betty pointed out we often don't register what signs say. It
gets me often too.

But it gets worse...

There's a speed cam around here which I have been aware of for several
years now. and yet, on occasion, I completely foget it's there, and
don't register the signs. Scary...
