From: R C Nesbit on 28 May 2010 06:20 My work colleague, Krzysztof, has just returned from a visit home to Poland, visiting family and friends, and one of his friend is a specialist ShiteOldBike restorer, especially Eastern European and Russian machinery. Particularly Dnepr, but any others can be sourced, or sent there to be refurbed back to an 'as new' state. For a fully refurbished machine to full Russian Army spec (excluding armament, obv.) he can supply for around 3k of your Englizh Poundz for a solo, a bit more wiva chair. http://www.f2motorcycles.ltd.uk/uraldalesmangearup.html offer a miltary lookeelike outfit for over 9k Does the FOAK reckon there is a viable market here for this? -- Rob_P UKRM(at)indqualtec.co.uk uppercase(d) BBIWYMC#1 BOG#11? What do you think? For £3,000, I'd have thought so.

At 3k? Possibly, although I seriously doubt the profitability of this, given that he's going to have a lot of paperwork to do, as well as, presumably, offering some sort of after-sales service and warranty. Back in the '70s relatively cheap Ural and Cossack outfits were popular for a while, but in those days there was quite a sizable population sho couldn't afford a car and still looked at outfits as everyday transport. That's no longer the case, so it's really only a curiosity market, so I'd think that the price won't be the main issue, TBH.

According to KP, since Poland is now in the EU, paperwork is not so much of a problem, plus the bikes would be registered with Polish or German plates, so ideal for GATSO dodging, if they went fast enough! Some pics of his work are on their way, so i'll post links here when they arrive. -- Rob_P UKRM(at)indqualtec.co.uk uppercase(d) BBIWYMC#1 BOG#11? No - £9k gets you a modern(ish) 750 with improved metallurgy and modern components .The importers can sell them here at that price because of this. Anyone without that sort of cash wanting a mil spec one is going to spend around the £1500 that a 650 solo fetches and do it up themselves.Sidecars are a different kettle of fish entirely , as continental ones will be on the right and can't be registered over here , unless you rebuild the whole bike onto a pre 81 frame already registered here :) Steve |
