From: Dean H on 7 Jan 2010 07:20 I'm considering adding welding tools to my arsenal. Old school torch setup seems versatile with its ability to heat, cut, braze, etc. Wire feed looks like the cat's meow though. Is wire feed a need or greed?

You have to pick based on what you need to weld, really. Dave

It's fast, easy, etc. 220 is better than 110...

Wire feed is ***FAST***, versatile and esy to use... 220v better than 110, but 110v very portable (use it about anywhere). Unless you intend to weld on a lot of thick old rusty stuff, wire would be my first choice, otherwise I might choose a dc stick welder first. Just depends on what you need a welder for?

It isn't quite that simple, what you are calling wire feed there are three variants. Self shielded flux cored, Gas shielded flux core, and what mig really means solid wire gas shielded. To do aluminum you will need the solid wire and argon. I would say tig is better for motorcycle stuff. The wire feed generally is faster. All welding can be quite frustrating unless you are to the level you can get certified.
