In my limited experience I've usually used assembly lube and confined
it to the actual bearing area. Once everything's together, spin the
engine for a good while with the starter with the ignition disabled
to make sure the oil pump gets primed and all the bearings have oil
to them before attempting to start it.

It is indeed a steel plug going into an Al sump. All my other bikes
that happen to use the same size sump plug, regardless of make,
are spec'd in the ~14 ft-lb range, which makes me wonder why Yamaha
continue to get it wrong.

Just one of those things where experience is an invaluable asset.
