I don't know exactly when, but I was left with the impression that Shindengen tinkered with advance, among other characteristics for easier starting and more power. I think I read about it on the web someplace. You say the 650 needs 100vAC, the 600's supply alot more with each kick, I got figures in excess of 400vAC P-P with a working CDI on my XL600R 1987. Out of the repair manual: Ignition timing initial 1983 6 deg btdc @1200rpm after 1983 11 deg btdc @1300rpm Full advance 31 dec btdc(a)4000rpm Joe XL600R

Good info both posts. The 100VAC was a placeholder number someone bandied about. The XRL just gets 12V to the CDI, all the time. Yet, it is reputed to pop-start without the battery. I have to confess I'm not sure if the XRL has a 'magneto' like an XR600R that just has a rectifier/regulator on it, or if it has a 'full- up alternator' (meaning "something other than an XR600R magneto" in this context), minus the variable field-coils, of course. This test would be easy to run, if I could power a 600R CDI direct off the XRL 'alternator'. Word on the street is, at cranking speeds, there's not enough juice. DDave

Hmm... DDave

I'd like it back. I wonder if the part number is the same? But, I suspect the 650 can run w/o the battery. I don't remember if there was a kick starter in the ones I looked at years ago. On an unrelated note, there was a 1997, I think, XR650L that wouldn't run, but cranked on Craig's list for $750.00 here in over-priced California. I spent a restless night on that one, don't have a garage. I'd say, look on eBay for pictures, maybe the connectors are different. But this module has two Molex type connectors, the connector with two pins is the trigger and the other connector is key on, the AC from the stator and ground. Joe XL600R |
