From: John Corliss on 9 Apr 2007 09:15 Anybody know what year Harley switched from short throw to long throw plugs for shovelheads? I used to know the answer but now that I own a Victory, that kind of thing is leaking out of my brain. -- John "blood flowing from ears" Corliss BS206

Prior to that they ran with the 5R6A plug Thanks for replying, Frank. Well, I found this page: http://www.harley-performance.com/harley-spark-plug.html which says: 1947-1974 shovels and pans used a 4R or 4R5 "H-D Standard" plug, no cross reference for Champions. I ran champions in my old '69 shovel before I had the heads converted to long throw, so I know there was a part number for short throw shovelheads (I've always preferred Champions by the way.) 1975-1981 shovels used a 5R6A "H-D Standard" plug and a RN12YC Champion. 1982-1984 shovels used a 5RL "H-D Standard" plug and a RN13LYC Champion. Still don't know which of these plugs are long throw though. Safe bet that the 82-84 plugs are. It kinda looks like '75 was the first year for long throw plugs. Dave's bike is a '75 FLH. -- John Corliss BS206

My '90 Evojo uses that same plug . On the other hand , Chuck Eaves bike ('79 , I think) has the early heads which take a short reach plug . I ran across a website a while back that had a ton of good info on the different Shovel heads . IIRC there were three styles and the mid run heads were considered the best . -- Snag aka OSG #1 '90 Ultra , "??" BS132 SENS NEWT none to one to reply
