When I lived in Kuwait (that's near the equator, right?) the time of
sunrise/sunset never seemed to change, but the days weren't
particularly long.

Yup that's what I found out and by 1800 or so every night it's dark. I
rather like our long summer nights.

Well, to be more precise, on the equator the days and nights are 12
hours each, all year round.
