I've owned GS1000S/E/Gs and rebuilt and worked on a few. What do you need to
know?

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember
chateau.murray.takethisout(a)dsl.pipex.com (The Older Gentleman) saying

Apart from the chain/shaft issue, they're enginely brothers to the 850s;
is it a mechanical query?

Uh, are you sure about that? I've owned both the GS850 and GS1000 and I
thought the 850 was developed from the 750. I can remember the comments in
the mags at the time. In fact a bit of Googling shows things like the cam
cover gaskets are the same for the 750 & 850, but not the 1000.

OTOH this was some 25+ years ago so my memory could be playing tricks.
