Hmmmmm -
My mother had one of those little engines with a roller that presses
on the wheel back when I were a lad in the early 1950s.
No number plates or licencing and there were quite a few around at
the time.
Nasty noisy little things and you had to pedal so hard standing up
on the pedals that it wobbled all over the road before it started
in a cloud of 2smoke.

Times (and legislation) have changed in the intervening half-century,
mind.

If that's the case, she was breaking the law. They had to be licensed
in the UK even in the 1950s.

Was it one of these?

No, it was a little French contraption, I think[1] that they might have had
a smaller engine than the Trojan.

[1] But it was nearly 60 years ago ......

Velo Solex on the front wheel, or Power Pack on the back, IIRC.

The Cyclemotor lived in the back wheel, I think. Many moons ago I had
most of a Wall Auto Wheel - you attached it to the bike frame rather
like a banking sidecar. Got it from a scrapyard - it'd be worth a
fortune now.
