I took a complete cylinder and head off a Douglas on a cat's eye and rode
it home on one (left hand) pot with the other balanced on the tank. I was
only about three miles from home but the loose conrod had badly worn the
camshaft at the bottom and cut through the case and was hitting the mag at
the top by the time I got home. I was lucky in that it ripped the end of
the right hand cable off.

Pretty much every Japanese bike I've come across, and certainly all
the inline fourts, have two crankcases.

OTOH, all the Jap bikes I've ever seen have two crankcase halves-
which combine to make a single crankcase.
