From: josell.paredes on 21 Oct 2008 23:14 I have a 2000 V-Star 650 Custom. I noticed when I first turn the key in the ignition BEFORE starting the bike, it makes a fast clicking sound somewhere under the gas tank then it stops. Then I go ahead and start the bike. Seems like it gets worse when it's colder? Any ideas? Thanks.

It's the electric fuel pump, item #57 on this drawing: http://webservices.motorsportdealers.com/parts/partImages/YAM/2/02/0019/0025.Gif Solenoid type fuel pumps go clickety-click until they fill the carburetor float bowl and the floats rise to shut off the fuel flow. Your ignition module probably contains a timing circuit that allows the pump to fill the carburetor float bowls and then automatically shuts the pump off after 5 seconds or so, to keep the pump from overflowing the carburetors or pumping the gas tank dry. The ignition module gets a signal from the pulse generator that controls spark timing. That signal tells the module that the engine running, or that the starter is cranking it. There may also be a tip over switch somewhere on your bike to shut the pump off if the bike is laying on its side after an accident.

OK, so does this mean that this is a normal function then or does it mean something is wrong?

An electric fuel pump going clickety-click for a number of seconds and then stopping is normal. The other points I brought up are electronic functions that your particular motorcycle may have. Given that *clue*, you might want to read a repair manual and find out exactly what your machine has before you run into trouble$ on the road and have to pay a towing bill to move it to a $tealer$hip where they charge a whole lot of $$$ to trouble$hoot electrical problem$

Like your bike, mine clicks for a few seconds when I turn on the ignition, and it gets louder when it's colder. As "-" said, it's the fuel pump getting the lines and carbs ready for action. I've been riding daily since March (500 miles/month), and haven't had any issues. I've had older cars that did the same thing. If your worried about it, keep an eye on Ebay for fuel pumps and snap one up when the price is right. CS
