Flying in to either SLC or SEA, hitting SpodeFest, then tripping around the West, seeing the sights. He could probably use some stateside help/advice. We can discuss it here or take it to the ISF forum: http://spodefest.net/isf/ Hopefully, Volker will pop in and guide us. IdaSpodeFestMaster

Very cool! We're international again! It's too bad Tiago can't make it too. I think Volker and Tiago need to meet in meatspace, they're forming quite a bond electronically. Anybody heard any more from Rowdy? Should they decide on Seattle, I can probably help with any local questions or assistance. Volker, let me know if you want/need any help, guidance, etc. I'm looking forward to meeting you. Tim H

I had to threaten my employer that I'd quit if he wouldn't allow a sabbatical. It was an ugly scene. I can't stand it when men are crying like babies... ;-) > Flying in to either SLC or SEA, hitting SpodeFest, then tripping around > the West, seeing the sights. .... and trying not to get it on with bears, being hit by a BFEM or digging a ditch. BTW, I remember a RMD-story where somebody slid down a slope with his bike, directly into some poisonous plants causing severe allergy. Prior to that, he got separated from his riding buddy(-ies?) and had to spend the night in the wild. My memories are quite blurry regarding that ride report but what I do know for sure is, that it was a very entertaining read. Can anybody help? > He could probably use some stateside help/advice. > We can discuss it here or take it to the ISF forum: > http://spodefest.net/isf/ Whatever you like best. Usenet has the advantage that I can access it at home without too much hassle and that there's the option of offline storage. > Hopefully, Volker will pop in and guide us. I already recherched some rental fees and it seems that motorhomes are ridiculously expensive. Those guys charge you for everything, dishes, cleaning, gas, one-way, etc. - so the RV-issue is not totally out of discussion but rather unlikely. Car + tent (mind the bears!) is perfectly fine as long as we can have a shower every now and then and probably the option of spending a night or two in a motel if we get lazy. Hauling all the extra luggage can get tedious and slows you down (the bag with riding gear is already large enough). In Australia, we took tent/sleeping bag/ect. with us but actually never used the tent. At SpodeFest I guess we'll be so tired when we return from those rides (and drunk after chatting with the folks) that we could sleep almost anywhere. And there are also those "Hot springs" (I checked out http://www.publiclands.org/explore/site.php?plicstate=ID&id=2541) which sounds pretty cool. Regarding the ticket: I'd say that arriving via SLC and departing via LAX might be a good alternative to a round trip. As always, tickets are quite expensive during holiday time - but that's life if your spouse is a teacher. I got used to that... Question is, if we should get a rental car from SLC or fly domestic to BOI (looks like that there are departures every day), but a 340mls/5hrs drive doesn't seem to justify that. Probably, we could also join Rowdy (or whatever RMDer comes along there) and drive together. However: Due to holiday restrictions, the earliest departure date is Fr, Aug. 30th in the evening (see http://spodefest.net/isf/index.php?topic=6.msg28#msg28), then add ~20hrs of flight. So I'd say I first book the flights to SLC and from LAX and then let's see. This is going to be VERY exciting. Cheers, MunichSpode -- @: I N F O at B A R T H E L D dot N E T 3W: www.bartheld.net

I was really looking forward to seeing him. Well, if I survive ISF2010, we could arrange ISF2011 in Brazil. Tiago, whatcha say? > Anybody heard any more from Rowdy? I'm going to drop him a mail - from his post on RMD "[...] Tempting indeed, on 1.-8. August the calendar pages are empty. But as usual i'd need someone to harass on the trip to ID. It was just SLC, UT to Pine, ID = 340 miles, 5:20 drive time vs. SEA, WA, to Pine, ID = 590 miles, 9:30 drive time. Regarding flights, there's not too much of a difference. > Volker, let me know if you want/need any help, guidance, etc. I'm looking > forward to meeting you. Hell, yeah! Of course I'm all in! There is plenty of space at my home and hotels here are dirt cheap. I can arrange bikes, borrowed or rented, hell, I can even have t-shirts specially designed for really cheap. > Hell, yeah! If it would be my decision, we could start right tomorrow! :-) have fun, don't let garbage anywhere near you tent and *do not in any circumstance* store food inside your tent, have a chat with the nice folks at Atlanta while having a rum and coke and finish the day by soaking at the nearby hotspring after the rides... Heavenly. -- T |
