Hi everybody!!

My buddy has a CRF80 & the owner's manual doesn't say how to adjust
the cam chain.

How do you do so?

TIA!

I did a search and found this on another forum - no personal claim to
accuracy - JayC

"If you take the stator cover off you can see the base of the cam
chain slipper on the right of the crank.
You can also see the adjustment bolt, where it connects.
If it is worn beyond what the spring will set it, you can reach in
there with a screwdriver and pry some more adjustment out of it and
retighten the adjuster bolt."

Almost forgot - the above quote might be regarding an XR200, but I
think they are all basically the same.

This in regard to adjust chain slack, right? If it is to set chain
timing, most bikes have a mark on the gear that is attached to the cam
on the head of the engine. Put the lobes "up" while aligning the mark
with the engine carcass (head cover). Then align it with the "T" (it
is a laid down "T" :-) which is stamped on the magneto and I am not
sure about the 80cc XRs, but on all others there are two screws (some
allen, some slot), one big, where it allows you to rotate magneto and
other small, where the laid down "T" will show. A lantern might be
handy to spot the "T'. Oh, btw, if you have to turn the magneto, do it
clock-wise... And don't forget to set the lobes "up"...

Jay & Tiago,

Thanks but the bike's almost brand new (so I'm sure there's plenty of
adjustment left) and he's not trying to check the timing, just do the
break-in service and get rid of any slack.

There's a lock nut on a stud poking out of the case behind the
cylinder that I seem to recall from my XR100/XR200 days is used to
release the slack adjuster to take the slack out then lock it but I
can't recall the details on how to do this.
