I had my battery clag and a friend's lent me a trickle charger.

I've plugged it in and hooked up the cables. The red 'Error check' light
comes on.
THe battery is a PowerVolt YTX-14-BS which says on the side 12V but the
charger's reading it as 6V.

I presume I'm doing something wrong, but the 3 cables (power, pos and
neg) are in the right spots. If I turn it on without the cables
connected to a battery I still get the error check light.

Anyone ? :)

You don't say what you have the amperage switched to, and whether you
have experimented with the other settings?

The error check light might go out after the battery charge reaches, say,
25%. Just guessing. Does it have a manual?

Thanks for the reply - there was no manual in the box, and I couldn't
find one online, so I called Master's Instruments who kindly scanned and
sent me a manual. The only changeable setting is the charge rate of 2, 4
or 6 amps. I tried all 3 before I posted but didn't mention it.

Turns out the battery contacts needed a bit more of a clean. Once I
scuffed them up with some sandpaper all was lovely. In this case the
error check light was a "why am I on and not connected to something?"
indicator.

I would suggest that something is wrong in the house
also something wrong with the charger
It is supposed to be an automatic detecting voltage, meaning that it
automatically selects 6 or 12 volts, depending on which battery you hook up
and from there, you manually select the amperage input.
I would hand it back to your friend as the lights are still on without a
battery connected, telling your friend it was like that when you first
connected it .

If the lights did not come on without a battery, I would suggest checking
the leads were connected to the right terminal
But, as you say, it happens while unconnected.

Take it back and invest in a solar trickle charger to leave connected when
it is out the back
