Done that a few times now--it's a couple of kays longer than the
highway,but worth it.

Buy a map and look at it, but don't look at the #1. You can get from
Merimbula to Melbourne (or Phillip Island) and about 99% of the trip is
off the Princes Hwy, some of the best roads in Victoria.
