The microphone is part of the mobile phone hardware.

There are persistent rumors that the next version will have.

I almost forgot but there is an option to add an external microphone
(the Apple headphone/mics won't work in the touch as they rely on
internal hardware).

A silly question, perhaps, but why?

The tachos on most modern bikes are digital and ought be at least as
accurate. Would any slight error make any real difference?.
