And another self-proclaimed expert.....who really knows nothing....rides
into town !!

Without a corresponding leaking needle valve or mal-adjusted float in the
carb., a leaking petcock results in...........NOTHING. Certainly not gas in
the oil.....unless the overflow in the carb is also blocked closed.

You need to address your carb. problems first.

There may not even BE a problem with the shut-off. If you ARE getting gas
in the oil, it might be getting there while the engine is running.

Actually I don't keep my bikes in anything like an air conditioned
garage or parking so the gas cooks off and leaves varish or some other
indescribable goop in my carbs. Supposed to get to 108F today. I think
the new ethanol mixes actually suck up water from the air which makes
the situation a bit worse.

The 2smokes' carb bowls fill up with oil so I can kid myself that it
supplies extra lubrication when they start after a long time idle.<sic>

If you're getting gasoline in your oil, you need to clean the float
valves and the float valve seats.

The smallest amount of gum and varnish on the seat will keep the float
valve from shutting of gasoline at the right level.

I have had to use a little bit of emery cloth on the end of a stick to
remove a bit of crud so small I couldn't see it without a magnifying
glass.

You can mail order the rubber parts from www.oldbikebarn.com or
www.bikebandit.com

Online parts companies charge about $10 for shipping and handling
though...

rick your're right,i know next to nothing but getting to know more and
willing to than the idiot who "rebuilt my carbs".i appreciate your
knowledge and i do ride horses pretty well-carbs-well,i'm trying.
someone posted that the floats on my 81 xj750 seca should top out at
18mm.Is this right?do you measure at the center of the bowl on the
side of the float or at the front of the float?
how can you tell iff the needle jets are leaking and what is the fix.
