Presumably that doesn't apply to helicopters? Only I saw one around
6PM.

It doesn't apply to anything flying under Visual Flight Rules. This
evening I saw a Cessna 152 turning onto final approach to Luton. I bet
it's been a while since that happened.

All day long the news has been saying that all commercial flights had
been grounded. No mention at all of non commercial traffic. I take it
this means private pilots are free to commit suicide if they wish.

Private pilots and helicopters tend to fly low, below the worst of the
problem. Also small private aircraft fly slower so they are less
vulnerable to windscreen etching and have piston engines which are less
likely to be damaged than turbines.

OTOH, I would not do it.
