It is easier to just change the oil completely every 1500 miles and
save yourself the bother of trying to check it. It doesn't use much,
but making any attempt to top it up always results in a massive
failure. If you drain it all out and change the filter, which costs
pennies, you can then put exactly the correct amount back in again and
know it's right for the next 1500 miles.

It takes so little oil that it's very worthwhile and cheap enough to do
this every 1500 miles if you plan to keep it.

I am certainly toying with that idea, it seems a lot less effort to take
it all out, that way you can be exactly confident how much needs to go
in.
