He was that. Too bad I didn't appreciate just how interesting until he was
too old to really talk about it.

sorry this response is so late - the way I live, I guess.
I made some LED lights for my 99FXDX, for the front signal lights (mounted on
some 1/2" aluminum stock, and has a rear view mirror on the back side). I
used some pre-made LED clusters for this task, nowhere as "do-it-yourself" as
your project, but it worked great. The item is called Radiantz Round Clusters
and come in amber or red, and are wired similarly to a two-filament bulb.
That is, there is a connection for running light and a connection for turn or
stop, high intensity. www.radiantz.com
There is the disclaimer that these are not officially DOT approved, etc. but
with a wink, they work just fine. They are of a size that they fit nicely
under the standard Harley round signal light lens, which IS marked DOT
approved.

The deal is that these clusters do not draw much juice, and depending on your
bikes electrical setup you may need a load equalizer device to make the
flashers work properly. Mine was in that category, so I also got a oad
equalizer gizmo. This item was called the "Load Equalizer III" a Badlands
product. complete with instructions.

I have no connection or interest with either of these products, so have
nothing to gain from this plug. They just work very nicely for me, and
thought I'd pass it on.

Plenty bright and easy to see.
