IRTA 'revolving leotard' and the image was no less disturbing. Maybe
slightly more so.

Thanks, I'll save that for posteriority. I've had some official
events where I've done "outreach" but I don't think I've had more success
educating the public than on these two newsgroups. Hard to quantify for a
performance review, thobut... (Especially if the reviewers don't ride
motorcycle sheds!)

Do that. This world needs more eccentric scientists with motorbikes, IME.

Yebbut, it's an exceedingly fine line between yer "eccentric" scientist,
as is all charming and amusing and whatnot, and yer actual "mad"
scientist, as wants to genetically modify the ozone layer using a black
hole with a mouse's ear growing on it.

And I, for one, cannot state with certainty which side of the
aforementioned line our Doctor falls.

Not with certainty, I can't.
