He'd be a cool guy to know if you're restoring one of these:) I believe
they went from a 530(?) to a 620(?) chain around '02.

Thanks for the tip.. I'll be looking into that.

I have a pretty irrational attachment to it:)

KZ1000's used a big 630 (3/4 inch) pitch chain from the get go, so far
as I know. But later model 530 (5/8 inch ) pitch chains were made of
improved materials that had 10,000 pounds tensile strength and it
makes sense to me to use the small chain because it's more flexible.

The Hayabusa and the ZX14 went to 630 chains because they are so
powerful.

I thought I threw my V&H catalogs away when I moved, but I found two
old ones. They list the Suzuki oil pump gears but don't show any gears
for the Kawasakis.

Which is not to say that some other speed shop who specialized in
Kawasakis didn't supply gears for racers.

I was at the bike show in Edinburgh this past weekend & the Police stand
had, in amongst all the usual road safety promotional bumf, a black
Yamaha R1 with 2 fluorescent flashes on it's front... and a video camera
behind the screen - you're not going to outrun a police rider on that
unless you're very, very quick :-)

There was also, on the Z1 owners club stand, a KZP - I've never seen one
before & it was a nice change from all the Eddie Lawson replicas.

ISTR that Yorkshire police tried a Harley a few years back but abandoned
it pretty quickly as hopelessly unsuitable - too slow & nowhere near
nimble enough.

Things have been going well. Other projects keep slipping in and pushing
my KL250 restoration project back. I've got another KZ650 SR in the
garage with a starting clutch issue (it slips) that I tore into last
night for a friend.

I heard that another reason Kawasaki got out the P market, was because
the factory molds and jigs to build it were worn out. That could have
simply been another rumor, but after almost 30 years of production it
seems a reasonable assumption. I'm guessing that new EPA and CARB rules
on the horizon left no room for an air cooled engine which was probably
another factor.

Take care, Mike.
