From: Sean_Q_ on 9 Nov 2009 18:31 I spent too much time this past summer and fall thinking about where I'd go riding south of the 49th in winter when I could have been on some good riding roads near here. Yesterday we took the van 50 miles up the Fraser Valley on an errand and discovered miles of twisty back roads all decked out in fall colors and hardly any traffic. Well, "discovered" isn't exactly the right word as I knew in theory they were there, but... well, anyway... excuses, excuses... life is what's going down while you're busy making plans for the future. I also discovered a good dirt bike area along Stave Lake and talked to some 4 wheelers on the way out whose cages where totally splashed in mud, and I mean up to the roof... that's always a good portent of some good clean fun. Mebbe I'll get inspired enough to take my camera on a few bike tours of the Fraser Valley and post some ride reports (with links to pix). I am sure you have seen or heard of the Destination Highways book. If you are wanting to know about the finest riding roads in BC it's the best. Lots of the better roads can be viewed on their website. http://www.destinationhighways.com/default.htm

For instance today's featured destination, DH3 is the Mount Currie to Lillooet Duffey Lake Rd (Hwy 99). I've been over part of this and its a scenic, total wilderness route, if rather slow (a lot of it is posted 60 kph). SQ

CRS If you haven't been there before and are looking for a weekend of good riding then head into the Slocan Valley, Kootenay Lake area. The ride from Kaslo to New Denver is one of the best. There is the "Threading the Needle" run from Needles to Lumby which is a winner. 6 from New Denver to Crescent Valley is spectacular. The whole area is target rich with terrific scenery and great riding roads. Free ferries, not much in the way of traffic and very few cops. There are several motels/hotels/bars & restaraunts in the area that welcome riders. I probably spend four or five weekends a year out there and I am still finding new places to see and ride.

I ride the North Georgia mountains, Cherohala Skyway, the Dragon, Nantahala Forest, etc. all the time. Two weekends ago, I was by myself so I went straight where I usually turn left and just meandered through some of the most beautiful back roads I've seen around here. I ended up dead ending into Hwy 369 - a main road included in a lot of my rides. I've lived here all my life and have never been on those roads; Im not sure some of them are on the map. This weekend I took a riding buddy and we both agreed this was our alternate route to Dahlonega. Most of my old riding partners are into Forestry Road riding now (anybody want to swap an F650GS or Wee-Strom for a Nighthawk?) so I ride more by myself. I plan on doing a lot more exploring this fall. -- Lew |
