Start at William I of England and work on from there (basically - the English Crown had ownership by marriage or conquest of large chunks of France including Aquitaine[1], Anjou and Normandy[2]). Needless to say the French King demanded that the English Kings (as Duke of Aquitaine et. al.) owed him feudal fealty and got shirty when he didn't get it and so decided that the lands would be recovered and given to proper Frenchmen. Cue the various wars (including the Hundred Year war) that resulted in the Rosbif being pushed out of France - culminating with Mary (she of Henry VIII daughter-vintage) finally losing the final bit (Calais). So fundamentally it comes down to a holdover from Medieval power-politics. And the fact that the the two nations have fought lots of wars for the last 1000 years.
