What is(are) the reason(s)? But the French hate the French. Well, the Normans hate the French, the Bretons hate everybody. Everybody hates the Parisiens and the Parisiens don't even know the rest of France exists outside August. Waves from Normandie. -- Le ColonelTupperware en Normandie

Huh? Harold Godwinson was most certainly English - given that his father was Anglo-Saxon and he was born in England. His mother was Norse - but that doesn't preclude him being English. You may be thinking of Harold Hardrada who was also Norse. But he was most definately not present at the Battle of Senlac Hill given that he was dead by that point.. (at the battle of Stamford Brigde a week of so before Senlac Hill). As to William being French - by his time the Normans were most definately Frechified - they spoke French, lived in France and used the French cultural standards rather than their previous Norse ones. And given that he was born in Falaise (which last time I chaecked was in France) and was descended from at least 5 generations of people born in France I'd say he qualified as French..
