also, with CANBUS systems, check that a previous owner hasn't wired an
accessory[1] into the circuit: this will make the ECU think there is a
short or leakage in the circuit.

[1] there should be a separate accessory relay/fuse

Well well. I couldn't see any visible frazzling, but swopped them for
new bulbs I had kicking around and the lights have both gone out.

I've been wondering how it would react to LED bulbs. Probably the same in
reverse.
