Had a lunch time coffee with an old mate who has just retired after 30
years as an AA man. he claims that in about 30% of the cases if you
take the key out of the ignition, lock the car, if you can, then hold
the key at waist height and drop it on the floor the problem will
clear on Renault, Nissan some BMWs and mercs.

If not its on to the already mentioned battery lead solution.
