You probably have Hitachi carbs.

Right. Since carburetor is vented to atmosphere the volitiles just cook
out the overflow tube and leave high boilers and solids.

Happens to me regardless of petcock but a leaky petcock certainly makes
the situation worse. Gets so hot and I some bikes I ride less then once
a year.

I should get off my duff and just drain tanks and seal up the bikes in
plastic sheets or something but I keep thinking "Next week I will start
riding every weekend." 91F in the shade as I write this.

Just my op, but I would go to http://sudco.com/ if you are having
trouble with the dealership. These guys really know vintage<and modern>
carburetion. There's also www.denniskirk.com that has an online catalog
with parts, cross ref/applications.

More op, but what do your plugs look like? It could be you only have one
problem carburetor and the rest are ok. I would just concentrate on
getting the carb associated with a fouled or black sooty plug fixed and
leave the others alone. You may have more then one problem, like
overflow and vent tubes clogged to go with floats not working properly.
I don't think they had charcol canistors in the early 80s on bikes... If
your overflow is working right, you should be seeing a puddle of gas
under the bike.
