My Mossbarg pump has a scope mounted off the side for shooting solids.....great fun! I prefer the harder hitting 7.62x54 Russian used in the old Mosin Nagants and Draganov's. Iv'e got the SKS in 7.62X39. Nice light recoiling rifle with a short stock for the boys to use, but it just doesn't bowl the goats like the 4.62x54 or .308 Win.. > > It's basically a less agressive AK-47, set up more for sport than flat- > out combat. Where do you go where you can shoot rats with a centrefire? As for pig hunting, do you use dogs as well?

In Texas, there is no closed season on most rodents/varmints, and my friend has a ranch where the desert rats are a pestilence at times. It's a guilty pleasure, but killing rats is among the funnest things you can do with an AK. Plus, it's sometimes necessary to keep disease down. > As for pig hunting, do you use dogs as well? I've seen dogs used on ferrell pig hunts, but have never participated actively. I think it may actually be illegal in Texas, but I'm not sure. However, Pit Bulls do their best work in this type of hunting, especially once they get their initial taste of blood. It's an awesome sight to behold. That said, we also hunt Javelina out here, which you wouldn't want to involve a dog in (IMO). Javelinas are extremely fierce and travel in packs. I've heard stories of Pits being literally torn to pieces in such situations. Cheers, Tim Kreitz 2003 ZX7R 2000 ZX6R http://www.timkreitz.com

For rat shooting Iv'e had fun at a pet food factory at night with a silenced .22, but the funniest was at a farm down south where I was doing some rabbit shooting. They had a big pit they threw all the dead animals/rubbish into which the rats are attracted to. We got 15 litres of petrol and dumped it in the pit then torched it. After the initial 'Whoooomf' and loss of night vision, there were rats on fire running away from the pit.....easy targets for the shotgun, but it didn't take long to realise they were starting grass fires! We spent the next 1/2 hour running around stamping out little fires. :) > >> As for pig hunting, do you use dogs as well? > > I've seen dogs used on ferrell pig hunts, but have never participated > actively. It's an awesome > sight to behold. My mate had a Pitbull, but he didn't take well to pig hunting. Once he locked on, that was it until the breaking stick was used. Some guys use pitbull/huntaway cross for strength and the ability to let go and take another grip if it's getting dodgey. Most use 3-5 dogs with a mix of balers and holders. There are some wild looking guys in the bush with BIG knives! > > That said, we also hunt Javelina out here, which you wouldn't want to > involve a dog in (IMO).
