Partly, then to flog in on asap with (hopefully) 1 months MOT on it should
recoup his costs.

That is odd indeed. Still replace it if it's done more than 36k anyway.
Check pulley bearings too, they go on these.

The valves & pistons don't care whether the belt broke. They're
still going to hit each other with disastrous consequences if
the engine was turning when the belt slipped off. Unless you
get a pro to help you, there's no way you're going to fix this.
