From: Sean_Q_ on 31 Oct 2009 19:27 ....you (might be) in for a big surprise, and no Teddy Bears' picnic. Use caution getting off your bike to take a leak; a 19-year-old woman was fatally mauled by two coyotes on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Mean looking coyote picture: http://a.abcnews.com/images/International/abc_taylor_mitchell_coyote_091031_mn.jpg I've seen coyotes around here, especially in winter when they get bold enough to prowl suburban streets. They look mostly like small, scruffy Alsatians. However this story says eastern coyotes can be twice as big (and more dangerous): http://www.edmontonjournal.com/technology/Eastern+coyotes+more+aggressive+expert+says/2162355/story.html More info: http://www.exclaim.ca/articles/generalarticlesynopsfullart.aspx?csid1=115&csid2=844&fid1=42221 http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20091030/coyote_hunt_091030/20091030?hub=Canada SQ

Seems rather harsh. Count yourself fortunate to live in a place where large predatory animals have been eradicated. Nobody knows how many coyotes there are in North America, but the population is increasing despite more than 400,000 of them being killed by hunters every year. Further, they are not some shy critter who you only encounter by going into the woods--there are estimated to be more than 2000 of them living in Chicago. It's true that coyote attacks on humans are rare with few fatalities, but they do happen, and are becoming increasingly common as coyote populations in suburban and urban areas increase and as idiots put out food for them. Here's one in downtown Calgary http://www.flickr.com/photos/sherlock77/2116330327/ And one in Boston about a half a mile from Harvard University http://www.flickr.com/photos/rhode2boston/1657085395/. And San Francisco http://www.flickr.com/photos/stubbornbeauty/2215602653/ And another one in Boston http://www.flickr.com/photos/shanecurcuru/3369247602/ Pasadena: http://www.flickr.com/photos/yausser/2200279097/ Not sure where this one is, but it's not way out in the woods http://www.flickr.com/photos/swpulley/1990314018/ Another in San Francisco http://www.flickr.com/photos/schuberts/445507521/ A couple in Sun City, Arizona http://www.flickr.com/photos/orsoazzurro/2170436792/ Another one that is clearly in a populated area http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotomom/252081380/ Chicago: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kscully/3652036304/ I could find more but you get the idea.

Who'da thunk it? Darwin's theory proven yet again and the gene pool gets some chlorine added.
