How much added weight and complexity? My 1000SS weighs 347 pounds and my S4Rs weighs 400 pounds. Neither goes off road, but the Multistrada is intended to....

I'll take YOUR word for it. But I know at least one gentleman with an early 90's (no I don't recall which one) that did a much needed rebuild (yeah he rode it that much) and it puked some gaskets or some such after the rebuild, the busted header and bolts ment he had to get a nice termignolli (hope I spelled that correctly) system. He had some issues with the carbs...<shrug> it's an older bike that get's ridden like it deserves to be ridden.

There is an occasional bad bike built by EVERY manufacturer, and there are occasionally mistakes made during engine rebuilds that can cause problems down the line. That doesn't mean that bikes built by a specific manufacturer are "self destructing junk;" even the Urals and the Royal Enfields that my baby brother owns have their redeeming virtues, as did the vintage British bikes that I owned for many, many years.

Yes. You must understand that Ducati is out to ensure the entire bike is properly maintained at that interval. There are cam belts to be changed, fuel filters to be inspected/replaced, fork oil to be changed and so on. After recently witnessing first hand just how crappy fork oil can become in a mere 20k miles I'm beginning to understand their reasoning. My FJR required teflon fork liners to be replaced because all the teflon fell off them and deposited itself in the resulting sludge. I've read mechanics that explain that people become adapted to the gradually reducing functionality of their unmaintained suspensions and don't seem to notice. One of my forks was so bad they couldn't disassemble it and had to toss it and Yamaha shipped me a new one even well out of warranty. Hat's off to my dealer and Yamaha. The last time I had to deal with Yamaha via a shitty dealer, I didn't even get fully refunded for a woefully under-designed top box they sold me that broke off and went luging down the highway. And that was well WITHIN the warranty period. > That I could live with. But $20k would kill me. (Well the wife would kill me) You can get the base model for around $15k. The touring model with bags, more hp, better suspension etc is $18,995 IIRC. |
