I've gotten better than 12,000 hours of operation out of a nice simpleminded, cast iron, water cooled, flathead piped to the propane tank for the house, running maybe 100 hrs/mo. A couple years after we sold the house it finally burned a valve and the idiot new owner scrapped it, but I figure he could have gotten another decade or two out of it. Gaseous fuel engines last for a long time and if you use propane, it's an easy fuel to store for long periods of time. Also cheaper than diesel engines.
