Well Daytona is sort of a big party, but there are many different
groups arriving there for *their own group parties* in what is the
warmest part of the USA in March and April

Daytona is a big motor racing venue for NASCAR, IMSA, AMA pro road
racing, AMA short track, AMA motocross, and vintage motorcycle road
racing starting in early March and the college students arrive for
Spring Break insanity in April.

The Harley riders and custom motorcycle crowd are a nuisance to the
"true believers" of motorcycle *road* racing, because they take up all
the lodging for miles around the Speedway, and then they don't even go
to the Speedway.

Back in the early 1970's, a contingent of Harley and chopper riders
did party in the Speedway infield, but they were too rowdy for the
"true believers."

The Speedway erected a separate "Harley Only" grandstand and the
Harley contingent did actually set one or two Hondas on fire over
there, before they stopped attending the AMA races altogether

The Harley riders do go to the AMA short track races in large numbers
during Bike Week, but it's at a completely different track.

Then there are other competitions that have nothing to do with
organized racing, like the dynometer competitions to see who has the
most powerful engine and there is a motorcycle destruction derby, but
that's not at the Speedway.

It sounds like heaven.

Odd. I would have put it down to all the space they take up with their
trailers.

I'm going for the motorcycle racing and to see old friends and to get
out of the cold weather and to kick off the 2010 riding season.

| Right. Now I understand. Well I don't really, the concept of The List
| still escapes me. I mean, the clothes you stand up in, a pocket full of
| cash and the bike, what else do you need that warrants a list?
|
The list pertains more to getting there than to the event inself. Most
attendees travel 100s of miles and many, like Tom for one example, 1000
miles or more. It's 4800 miles from Anchorage to Daytona but we don't get
many from there <g>.

Daytona is many things to many people. First there are the vintage bike
races, shows and swap meets popular with folks who don't even own old bikes.
I used to go just for them. Then there are the modern bike races - road and
dirt - that were and prolly still are worth seeing. In between is the week
long party. Last but not least are the good folks who wear suits and ties
all year but like to get into a "biker" costume and hang with real bikers
once a year. Trouble is all they really see are dudes just like themselves
.... but don't tell them - Daytona needs their money.

Steve don't go 'cuz his Gold Wing can't make it that far.

Fool. Nice to get confirmation that your sense of my emotional state
is as poorly informed as is your sense of every other facet of reality.
