...but most Autobahnen are _not_ unrestricted. And some that are
have signs saying (IIRC) that if you choose to ignore "advice" about which
speed to travel, your vehicle insurance may be invalid.

You're mixing two things here:

- Some Autobahnen do have a posted speed limit as you say, especially
around built-up areas
- There has been an 'advisory' top speed of 130km/h for decades and some
inswearance companies _in Germany_ have used this as a weasel clause
to get out of paying out on accidents where people were driving a lot
faster. That however only applied to the fully comp part of the
insurance as I don't think they can weasel out of the third party
part. Doesn't stop them trying, though.
