Just how bad were the Japanese naval gunners?

On March 1, 1942 USS Edsall (DD219) evaded 1268 rounds of 6, 8, 14
heavy ordnance from battleships Hiei and Kirishima and heavy cruisers
Tone and Ckikuma, sustaining only *one* minor hit in a two hour
running battle...

Admiral Noguma was incensed by the failure of Japanese naval gunners
to sink the Edsall and ordered dive bombers from his carriers to
finish the job.

The Japanese naval gunnery manuals were rewritten as a result of this
otherwise insignificant naval battle.

My uncle was on the Edsall, you twerp.

That's how I found out what happened to his ship.

The Japanese picked up several sailors and soldiers from the wreckage,
but left most of the crew to drown in the Java Sea.

About three years later, Admiral Nogumo blew his brains out in a cave
on Saipan.
