Agreed.

It was, indeed, an amazing gun. The British 25-pounder was another
remarkable piece. But the German 88 trumps them all, IMHO (though I
admit I haven't your expertise/knowledge here).

Nothing damages a machine more than an ignoramus with a manual, a
can-do attitude and a set of cheap tools

Ok, so I wasn't at the Battle of Kursk (thank my lucky stars).
There was a doco on it recently on the History Channel and
naturally the high point of the film (apart from the German
withdrawal) was the sight of sidecar rigs looking like mine,
bouncing along across the Russian Steppes.

Of course it was all part the the Nazi Drang Nak Osten to get
more Leeben's rom to colonize and farm -- in a region with
a climate a lot like the Canadian Prairies. I can tellya,
I wouldn't have been very motivated to fight in a horrendous
tank battle just so I could take up farming in Saskatchewan.

The 88 was a top of the line AAA gun with no peer and damned few
equals (the fusing and war head were damned fine also) It really
didn't catch any eyes until truly smart and cunning sob got the idea
to utilize it as a field piece instead of just shooting aircraft. But
I've never really read up on the gun...it's expensive on ammo and I'm
cheap so why shop eh?
