Did the Germans end up winning the war and we somehow failed to hear about it? If not -and I believe this to be the case- Russia *had* the means to counter the German plans and did exactly that. If Hitler hadn't been living in a fantasy world of German uber- superiority he'd have taken a quick look at a map of Russia, consulted the stats on the relative population numbers of Germany and the Soviet Union, and would have *instantly* decided to make Little Joe his best pal forever. Germany's fate was sealed fom the moment they invaded Russia.

If the Germans hadn't invaded Russia, the Russians would have invaded Germany. There are documents on the interwebby thing which refer to the massing of Soviet army units near the border before Hitler drove to the east.
