You don't necessarily need a complete understanding though,
as long as you're able to produce a predictable result. Lots of
times, complete understanding comes way later than the observation
of a predictable experiment result.

No understanding of the mechanism is needed to produce
the desired result. You can often accomplish quite a bit
just by careful experimentation and observation of a
black box.
