Flying Officer is a very lowly commisioned rank in the RAF. If he
served some years then I'd have expected him to have risen a fair way
above that.

I think he meant an officer who flies rather than Flying Officer. I seem
to recall Wing Commander being mentioned.

That was exactly what I meant - an officer who flies a plane, rather
than a desk.

Apparently, and I know you'll find this as hard to believe as I do, at
the posh girls school she went to, Biggles wasn't on the reading list.
