I looked at the prices and thought they were a bit steep but not
knowing what the local rates were I didn't bother commenting until
now.

Ah. I don't think I've ever done that - whenever I've been travelling
across France I've pitched up at a hotel (usually via the tourist
office, who'll phone round for you), and got a room. If I've eaten at
the hotel, then I've organised that separately. And I'm fairly sure
that I've *always* been charged separately for brekkie.

Well, most hotels only quote you the most expensive, rack rate when you
turn up unannounced. I've only booked demi-p when planning ahead. Quite
often, when using sites like http://www.booking.com/ you get offered room
only or a meals option. The latter can work out quite good value, as long
as you aren't a fussy eater: food tends to be no/limited choice menu like
in the Enzian or buffet.

Yes. Almost invariably IME French hotels will quote either bed only,
with extra charge for breakfast, or demi-pension.

Well yes. But B&B is rare.

We generally use Logis, at around 60 per room per night or 60 per
person per night demi-pension.
