That's quite a charge, Bob. Do you have ANYTHING to back it up, or is it just another of your uncalled-for, scurrilous, personal attacks, like the ones you launch against me about every 3-4 months?

You must be having wish-fulfillment deams. I grew up next door to -and best-friends with- the Mercado family: immigrants from Mexico (legal) who came here with nada and ended up putting all 5 of their kids through college. Good people. Their youngest son, Hank, is still a good friend and has been my dentist for the last 20 years.

That's just Bob's try at a put-down because he thinks college instructors are automatically stupid. In fact, I've been a professional musician/luthier (as in making a good living at it) for 46 years now, and show no signs of retiring, but I also taught music at the University of California (Riverside) for years and years. As for engineering prowess, I'd love to see our hero try to design and build a musical instrument from the ground up. I could use a good laugh. Herewith a Strad repro guitar I built about 20 years ago. http://web.archive.org/web/20020620141931/chordacopia.com/images/instruments/strad_front.jpg

There's surely a lot of history on AMS which (thankfully) I'm not aware of and I've had my run-ins with Bob too, over the years. But isn't calling him a racist (just because he sides with Krusty's mechanical advice on occasion) just a bit over-the-top? That would be like me thinking you're a bigot because of who you side with on this issue now. People and issues don't pan out that simply and, for those who need to reduce everything to someone's race, religion or motorcycle, it's not a good indicator. All part-and- parcel of the same failing that seeks to distill complex issues into simple categories, IMO. But usenet is what it is, isn't it? It's a bit like we're all forced to experience Asperger's Syndrome here. People who suffer from that can hear and understand the words being spoken, but they're compromised socially by the fact they cannot interpret facial expressions for context; that last thing being so essential. Likewise, since a word-only environment like this is bound to result in more misunderstandings, perhaps it behoves participants to give others a little more benefit of the doubt than they feel obliged to in real life exchanges. Unfortunately, however, it seems more often the reverse of that. It's like, going on partial evidence, people take a great deal more confidence in the conclusions they draw, instead of less. At the risk of relying on simplistic categories myself, perhaps people basically fall into two, main grouping: There are those who think people can never change (so they will never forgive) and those who think people can change (so they have to remain open to that possibility). I'd like to think people can change and that, if their behaviour improves, you should welcome them back into the fold (even in cases as bad as Krusty). Unfortunately, the ability to change can also mean that some people slowly become worse over the years (I can think of one or two like that) - which might mean they should think about focusing more of their time on easier-to-handle, real life relationships if they're not doing well at the online stuff. |
