I agree with the previous poster that suggested a dual-sport. A
DL650 V-Strom is probably the most bike for the money if you're going
to be on paved roads 95% of the time, although it's not really of much
use in real dirt. A BMW F650GS single or the new twin would be better
off road, but more expensive. A KLR650 is probably what he should get-
a relatively new one with low miles can be had for a fraction of what
the BMW costs and they're tough and plenty capable of riding just about
anywhere you'd ever want to take a two-wheeled vehicle.

Typo. Should be '02 (missed the '0' key).

Ninety-five horses on the black top
First they champ
Then they stamp
Then they... run like stink!

(Doesn't rhyme, but you get the drift. See my posting "I am at risk"
of Jan 26).

See below. The 2WD would be for use in slippery snow (of which we had
only 2 days so far this winter, but 6 weeks of it last year).

Yes. Happens sometimes.

My partner refuses to ride pillion under any circumstances. However,
she'll ride in the sidecar.

Possibly, but I'd rather put the bike in the box of a pickup
truck or on a flatbed or in a toy hauler (partitioned RV).

How would I get an 800-lb tour bike up onto a truck? I haven't
exactly figured that out yet. Maybe a used Hiab?

Blythe is a lot closer than Phoenix...

When you realize the distances between major points of interest in the
southwest and how much time you'll be spending riding the same road
*multiple times* to get back to your RV, you just may realize that
hauling a motorcycle doesn't work out the way you expected.
