Lets go back to my basic reservations.

People pay (say) 300/y for a "24meg superfast bells and whistles"
connection.
So for a comparable size leased internet connection BT will charge you
something like 24,000/y
Obviously something gives somewhere, yes? and the answers are QoS and
contention.

It would be *much* better if the UK concentrated on providing a high quality
(with SLA) service of (ok I submit) 5Mbps at an affordable price rather than
silly claims that deliver rubbish. And upload speeds more comparable to
download speeds. Also, at that rating the UK can reasonably expect to run
the national backbone networks and international connections free of
congestion. We just cannot provide a true 24meg service to everyone for 25.

In the office here Zen provide me with a reliable 5Mbps down and 0.75Mbps
up. The latter limits me but the former does ok and I download a fair bit
of Very Large File stuff in the evenings. So if I could be provided with 5
down and 2.5+ up at an (effectively) uncontended rate with QoS SLA for the
same money in future I'd be ever so pleased. And if a similar QoS for 24
down and 12 up was available for 50-100 I'd snap it up.

I'm sure all countries have to struggle with the same facts of life.

Really? I have a man to fit it already, so I'm just looking for units.
We'll *probably* be moving next year, so top quality is not quite as
important as good price.

Post? How quaint.

I promise not to lower the tone of the area ;)

Well, I didn't use them myself, but only because of several horror
stories from friends and FoFs.

If they're only doing the supplying, it might be different kettle of
haddock though.
